Read the AKA Booklet

“Methodologies for Fostering Social Action and Democratic Engagement”

The AKA (Awareness, Knowledge, Action) Active Citizens project set out to strengthen democratic participation among young people from vulnerable backgrounds across eight countries. Too often, these young voices are excluded from political conversations that directly affect their lives and futures. To address this, the project used Global Citizenship Education (GCE) concepts and methodologies as a foundation for empowerment—offering workshops that raised awareness, built knowledge, and equipped participants with the tools to engage meaningfully in democratic processes.

Drawing on the outcomes of this initiative, a new booklet has been developed as a practical guide for educators and practitioners interested in fostering transformative learning. It introduces key GCE concepts and offers practical tools, definitions, and a six-step approach to help educators begin—or deepen—their engagement with global citizenship methodologies.

Available in eight languages, the publication highlights the non-formal educational strategies used throughout the project and reflects on their impact across diverse communities. It serves as both an inspiration and a resource for those committed to inclusive, participatory education.

Read new reports on civic education and join the network of civic educators

The CIVICS Innovation Hub

New publications

THE CIVICS Innovation Hub, a pan-European non-profit dedicated to enhancing democratic competence and resilience from the ground up,has released two insightful reports: “Between Disruption and Resilience” and “Great Expectations.” These publications shed light on the current state and future potential of civic education across Europe.

The first report, “Between Disruption and Resilience,” presents a comprehensive overview of civic education in 35 European countries. It highlights a growing crisis in the sustainability of non-formal civic education, which remains heavily reliant on short-term, project-based funding, undermining long-term impact and organisational stability. The report calls on funders and policymakers to consider more sustainable approaches and at the same time showcases alternative revenue streams, including fee-based training, consultancy, and partnerships with local businesses.

The second report, “Great Expectations,” focuses on the demands and realities of civic education in 21 European countries. It underscores the essential role civic education plays in fostering active citizenship and democratic resilience. However, it also reveals that limited resources—particularly financial—continue to hinder the effectiveness and reach of these programmes.

The network

In addition to these reports, THE CIVICS Innovation Hub has launched the Mapping Civic Education in Europe tool—the first interactive network map of non-formal and informal civic educators across the continent. This digital resource enhances visibility and connectivity among civic education actors, allowing users to explore organisations by location, focus area, methodology, and experience. It is designed to support the work of civil society organisations, international NGOs, funders, researchers, and policymakers. The map also features NECE Impact Spots—innovative, youth-led projects supported by the Civic Innovation Fund that are piloting new approaches in civic education.
