Bridge 47 - 10th International Conference on Global Citizenship Education

Bridge47 has been invited to participate in the 10thInternational Conference on Global Citizenship Education (GCED), hosted by the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) in South Korea. This annual conference serves as a global platform for educators, policymakers, civil society, and institutions to exchange innovative practices and pedagogical approaches in GCED. With participants from across sectors and continents, the event aims to advance the implementation of SDG Target 4.7 and foster a culture of peace through education. This year’s theme,“Democracy in the Post-Truth Crisis: The Role of GCED,” invites you to reflect on how education can respond to the challenges of misinformation, polarization, and democratic backsliding.

As part of the session “Teaching Democracy Differently – GCED in Action,” Bridge 47 invites you to contribute inspiring examples and good practices in democratic citizenship education - particularly from Europe,North America, and Africa. Your insights will help showcase how GCED can empower learners to engage critically and constructively in democratic life.

Join the NECE Festival 2025

European Festival of Civic Education

The NECE Festival is a vibrant annual gathering that brings together voices from civil society, politics, academia, media, and the arts.Held in a different European city each year, the festival fosters interdisciplinary dialogue and action around the most pressing issues in civic education. In 2025, NECE turns its focus to a powerful and timely theme: Hope.

Hope, as a collective aspiration, has long fuelled transformative movements—from the civil rights era to today’s global calls for justice. At NECE 2025, they want to explore how shared hope, not just individual optimism, can unite communities and inspire meaningful change. They will also examine hope as a driving force—a catalyst that motivates, mobilises, and activates. Whether in grassroots initiatives or global campaigns, hope is the invisible engine behind revolutions and reforms.

Join ESPE 2025

“Rethinking European Traditions”

What European traditions continue to shape education today—perhaps subtly, from the background? Which influential ideas, theories,or approaches have been overlooked or forgotten? What does it mean for a tradition to be considered “European,” and how might these legacies be reimagined in response to today’s political and social challenges?

These are the central questions guiding the inaugural meeting of the ESPE, focusing on “Rethinking European Traditions”. This gathering invites scholars and educators to critically engage with the foundations of education in Europe, and to explore how these traditions can be reappropriated and revitalized.

 Topics covered in various sessions

  • Bridging Divides: Transnational Strategies in Civic Education for Polarized Classrooms
  • The End of an Illusion? Democratic Education in and for Europe
  • Schools as places of vulnerability and resilience: European educational traditions and critical pedagogy as a basis for critical debate and democratic education
  • Impartiality, Human Rights Advocacy, and Teaching about Politically Sensitive Issues: Squaring the Circle
  • And many more!

Re-examining Norms of Good Citizenship When Democratic Values are Under Threat

The special issue of the journal Political Psychology,Re-examining Norms of Good Citizenship When Democratic Values are Under Threat”, aims to facilitate a cross-disciplinary dialogue that crosses geographic and temporal boundaries. To achieve this, the journal wants to bring together normative and empirical approaches on citizenship, ‘good citizenship’ and norms of ‘good citizenship’. It welcomes studies of liberal democracies, regions with colonial legacies and countries with fragile institutions. All contributions to this issue will assist in exploring the complex interplay between different factors (individual, institutional, behavioral and psychological) that shape contemporary citizenship, work out a more detailed theory of the norms of ‘good citizenship’, and analyse their implications for the future of democracy, political institutions and public engagement, and civic education.

Key research questions

  • What does ‘good citizenship’ mean, and how stable is this meaning across time and space?
  • How do psychological factors, such as emotions, collective identities, and ethical behaviour, shape perceptions of good citizenship and citizenship norms?
  • What are the main changes in citizenship norms, and which factors (economic, political, psychological, social, etc.) are related to these changes?
  • How are citizenship norms linked to social, educational, technological, and psychological processes?
  • How do citizenship norms vary across different socio-political, cultural, geographic, and temporal contexts, and what are the implications of these variations for democracy and civic education?

 Submission Guidelines

  • Abstract: Submit a 500-character (max) abstract by ❗Tuesday, July 15, 2025
  • Include 3 to 5 keywords
  • Needs to be aligned with the theme of this special issue and the aims and scope of Political Psychology.
  • Submission: Email abstract to sinorms@hku.hk
